WELCOME to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Local 1687 (IBEW 1687)

           On behalf of the Brothers and Sisters of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1687, Northeastern Ontario, I would like to welcome you to our new Home on the Internet.  Our goal is to provide an ongoing service to our membership throughout our jurisdiction, and invite anyone working in the electrical trade in the Construction Industry, to come and join our membership, to stand beside us, to grow and prosper. Since February of 1951, our membership has been helping to build your communities throughout Northeastern Ontario. We strive to develop superior Electrical Workers in the Construction Industry and continue to do so through our successful Electrical Apprenticeship Program.

NEWS: February 15, 2012

WE are please to announce that Brother Tim Butler, President IBEW Local 1687, has been appointed to the College of Trades, Trade Board for Construction and Maintenance Electrician. Brother Butler's appointment will run for three years until February 2015. Congratulations to our Local and to Brother Butler.

The Northern Ontario Joint Apprenticeship Council, had the Apprentice Application Exam on Friday January 20, 2012. There were 140 hopeful applicants who came out to write the application exam at the Raddisson Hotel. From the 140 applicants, 44 successful applicants scored high enough to be granted an interview on Saturday. There are a lot of very strong applicants looking for an apprenticeship contract with our Local. The NOJAC Council who will select this years probationary apprentices, does not have an easy task in front of them!

Six years ago, there were 35 apprentices in the system. Today, we have over 90 apprentices working in the trade throughout our jurisdiction. Our apprenticeship system is alive and well.
